I have crossed the rubicon of diet complacency. Once renowned for an ability to maintain a constant weight despite meat pies, creamy pastas and jam doughnuts, I now have to be more careful. This is a challenge I welcome and have embraced. I now charge into the streets at night, running madly as part of operation calorie control. I set myself unrealistic targets, but my inner determination rises to the challenge, and every day the laces are tied up and ready for a pounding. There is just one weakness that this Fort Knox display of discipline and determination can’t resist – the mini pack of savoury crisps. So cute in their packaging, their offer of love and comfort, reward and pleasure. I am overpowered. I devour the love. I eat eight packs in an extraordinarily fast succession. Afterwards, I wonder what is love, is it really in these small packets of sugar coated fat globules. No, I don’t think so. Until next time.

Consciousness arrived just in time

As I regained consciousness me as my brain continued to sway from left to right inside my head. Then I saw something move in the chair just behind me. It was the doctor. ‘Are you alright Joanna?’ He spoke slowly in his steep English accent. I felt like saying, ‘what do you care?’ But I stayed silent, trying to get my consciousness fully to the surface so that I could plan my next move. ‘You took quite a fall, I wasn’t sure if you would wake up at all.’ Such pleasure in his voice shocked me even now. But what could I expect from the man who had completely ruined my life. I hated him and focused on how I might end his life, even though he was my father.

My favourite subject at school was biology because it was half interesting and half real as opposed to mathematics which seemed so pointless and dumb. It used to frustrate me so much because I couldn’t see the point of it all. I mean where in my life am I going to run into x=mc squared. Never! Surely what is interesting and relevant to growing teenagers is information about the meaning of life. I mean at least in biology we studied evolution and where we humans originated from. It was half relevant to my mind and the questions its asking. I mean how good would it be if at that point in time when you are seriously trying to grapple with who you are and how your meant to fit into the world if we had a map of knowledge answering all those real questions. A map of knowledge where we could see very clearly where we fit into the whole picture and what the meaning of it all really is? I mean what is science really for? Surely the ultimate role and goal of science is to answer all those very meaningful and significant questions.
